An independent commission will be created to study issues that have surfaced since the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said Tuesday. Nixon, who has been criticized by some residents and activists who say he hasn't done enough to address the unrest in the St. Louis suburb, said the Ferguson Commission will examine the social and economic conditions underscored by the weeks of protests following the shooting.

Sometimes it's hundreds of demonstrators, sometimes just a handful. But they're always outside the Ferguson Police Department, clamoring for the indictment of Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

Michael Brown's gunshot wounds included a shot in the hand at close range, his official autopsy shows, according to an analysis reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch . The detail could lend credence to Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson's account that he and the unarmed black teenager scuffled at his patrol car before Brown was shot and killed.

Police officers in Clayton, Missouri told reporters that they had to use force to arrest a woman holding a pumpkin with the word "racism" written on it because they "sensed" that she might smash it outside the St. Louis County Justice Center. Over the weekend, a group of mostly-white students and agitators rioted at a pumpkin festival in Keene, New Hampshire.

As a child in New York City schools, I was taught all about the American Revolution. It was pointed out to this child of refugees, that among the wonderful characteristics of living in America, is that people could openly inform the government of their displeasure with its behavior.
