St. Louis County police say officers fatally shot a man armed with a rifle in Jennings after he opened fire on them. Police spokesman Brian Schellman told KSDK-TV the officers were responding Wednesday night to a report of gunshots.

County police officers shot and killed a man after he allegedly pointed a rifle at them during a chase in suburban St. Louis, less than five miles from the site of the August shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white Ferguson officer that sparked weeks of unrest. The shooting happened Wednesday night in Jennings a St. Louis County town of 15,000 residents.

The city of Ferguson has released its plans for a series of town hall meetings officials hope will help restore trust in a community rocked by the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The neighborhood meetings begin on Monday evening with three sessions at three different locations in the north St. Louis County suburb.

Shortly after being given more time to weigh evidence in black teenager Michael Brown's fatal shooting, a Missouri grand jury heard from the man at the center of it -- Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson -- a local newspaper reported. Wilson shot and killed the 19-year-old Brown in the middle of the day on August 9, in the middle of a street in the St. Louis suburb.
